MEET JENNIFER: Being Miss.Wheelchair America & What the DancingMan Party Meant to Me

I had the awesome privilege of being a guest at Sean O’Brien, AKA Dancing Man’s dance party. Hosted by the Dance Free Movement and Los Angeles Tourism, this epic party was held in the heart of Hollywood, CA.  

 Sean has endured cyber bullying and body shaming first hand, as many of you have heard through his viral story on social media. I was born with partial limbs and experienced being bullied and teased for my  physical anomalies in school during my adolescent years. I also experienced the power of encouragement, acceptance and friendship during my college years.  My personal experience inspired me to start an anti-bullying campaign called "The Power of Words" and write two books on the subject.  I share this campaign in schools nationally.  My path as a motivational speaker lead me to the awesome privileged of carrying the title of Ms. Wheelchair America 2014. 

My experience of Sean’s celebration was life changing.What a privileged to dance for such a wonderful cause. Celebrity guests such as Monica Lewinsky, Whitney Thore (My Big Fat Fabulous Life) and Americas Next Top Model Contestant Hannah Jones were there, to name a few, in support the message of positive body image. I think  I loved this party so much because everyone was standing up for people who have experienced bullying and public shame.  I know how it feels to be unaccepted and I believe everyone should have the freedom to love themselves regardless of how they look. My experience of dance clubs in general have always left me feeling icky, but with Moby as the DJ, this pumpin’ party had so much positive energy that the night was a spiritual experience! It was definitely and mountain top experience! 

I left that party inspired to continue the Dance Free Movement. I am starting a non-profit called Making Dreams Come True, and I will continue to dance for a cause and help others who have felt held back and publicly shamed feel free to dance!
